Two ways to read Fish Baron

Fish Baron is a fishing and outdoors publication first. Layered on top of it is something most outdoor sites never try: an anonymous, reader-powered study of how anglers actually fish, what they buy and what they remember. So you get fishing answers based on what real anglers choose, not one writer’s hunch.

Two layers

One site, two jobs

01

Layer one: the articles

Tackle and technique, fishing boats, the towns and waters worth the trip, camping, wildlife and a healthy dose of nostalgia for how we learned to fish. Written to inform, inspire and, now and then, make you laugh.

02

Layer two: the reader signals

Small, optional taps sit alongside the articles. Each one is anonymous. Added together across many readers, they answer questions nobody has good data on: which boats readers would actually buy, how many keep their catch, which era of fishing they grew up in.

The signals

What you can tap

01

“One lure for the rest of your life?”

A one-question poll. You see the reader split as soon as you vote.

02

❤️ or 👎 on a cabin, a boat or a tackle box

Reactions on photos show which styles, colours and eras readers love.

03

“Lived it · Remember it · Before my time”

On our fishing-nostalgia articles: how many readers grew up with the old cantilever tackle box.

04

Guess the price

On articles that list prices, guess what that rod or outboard cost before the answer appears.

There is also a one-tap “why?” follow-up after you react to a photo, so we learn the reason and not just the vote. Alongside the taps we record ordinary page analytics: which images were viewed, how far you scrolled and how long you stayed.

Exactly what is recorded

Kept, and never collected

Stored with each tap

  • What you tapped, on which image or poll
  • A random session code, not linked to your name, email or any account
  • Device type, such as phone or desktop
  • How you arrived, such as search, Pinterest or Facebook
  • Approximate region, state or province only, read from the network edge
  • If you came from an ad: the ad platform’s aggregate age and gender mix for everyone that ad reached, never anything about you

Never collected

  • Your name or email address
  • Your IP address
  • Any account or login
  • Your precise location
  • Anything you type
  • Faces: images are described by style, colour and era, and people in them are never identified

How results are published

Totals only. Never about one person.

01

You see the split

Right after you answer, you see how other readers answered. Later, the combined results become data-backed articles and charts.

02

Many readers, never one

We only ever publish totals across many readers. Small groups are never reported, and nothing is ever published about an individual.

03

Always optional

If you do not tap, nothing beyond ordinary page analytics is recorded. Anything you save lives in your own browser, and clearing your browser storage removes it.

What it lets us find out

  1. Which fishing boats readers would buy tomorrow, and why
  2. How many readers fish mostly from shore versus a boat
  3. Which old-school gear readers remember using
  4. What readers think gear really cost back then
